Scope of Work
CRUZ Contractors LLC served as the Microtunneling Contractor for the City of Baltimore, MD
For the Herring Run Interceptor projects in Baltimore, Maryland, The Microtunneling method was specifically chosen to navigate sensitive stream valleys, avoid existing structures, and minimize environmental impact while upgrading the city's aging wastewater infrastructure. Project Scope & Execution The Herring Run Interceptor system, originally constructed in the early to mid-1900s, required extensive rehabilitation and capacity upgrades. Because many of the parallel interceptor pipes were located in stream valleys, traditional open-cut trenching would have caused severe environmental disruption and increased sewer infiltration. To bypass and upgrade the aging lines, contractors utilized microtunneling: Trenchless Benefits: Microtunnel-boring machines (MTBMs) were used to install 2,200 LF of 54” ID Reinforced Concrete Jacking Pipe. This allowed crews to lay deep pipes without disturbing the fragile ecology of the stream banks or halting traffic in surrounding urban areas.
